Learn how to pick the right wooden tray for serving drinks, organizing decor, or protecting surfaces. Compare size, material, and care needs with KINTO's UNITEA and placemat options.
Quick answer
For serving drinks and snacks, choose a larger non-slip tray like the UNITEA Non-Slip Tray; for individual coasters or small decor accents, the UNITEA Coaster works well. A placemat set protects surfaces during meals while adding warmth to your table decor.
Size matters: serving vs. decorative use
A tray that works for carrying multiple cups needs to be large enough to hold them steadily. The UNITEA Non-Slip Tray (265×215 mm) is a practical serving size for two to three small cups or a teapot with a cup. For single coasters or small items like a salt cellar, the UNITEA Coaster (115×115 mm) is compact and easy to place anywhere.
Placemats offer a middle ground: the Placemat 270×200 mm fits a single dinner plate and glass, while the larger Placemat 430×330 mm can hold a full place setting or serve as a small tray for a teapot and snacks.
Material and care trade-offs
All KINTO wooden trays and placemats are made from natural wood with a urethane coating. This gives them a warm, natural look but also means they are not dishwasher-safe and should not be soaked in water. Alcohol sprays can damage the coating, so wipe them with a tightly wrung cloth instead.
The UNITEA Non-Slip Tray uses willow laminated wood, which has a distinct grain pattern. The UNITEA Coaster is walnut, offering a darker, richer tone. Both are handmade, so slight variations in size and grain are normal.
Non-slip feature for practical serving
If you plan to carry drinks across a room or serve on a low table, a non-slip surface prevents items from sliding. The UNITEA Non-Slip Tray includes a non-slip layer, making it a safer choice for serving. The standard UNITEA Coaster and placemats do not have this feature, so they are better for stationary use.
Decision rules for choosing a wooden tray
- What will you use it for?: For carrying drinks or snacks, choose a tray with a non-slip surface like the UNITEA Non-Slip Tray. For stationary decor or single cups, a coaster or placemat works fine.
- How many items do you need to hold?: A single cup or small object fits the UNITEA Coaster (115 mm). For a teapot and two cups, choose the UNITEA Non-Slip Tray (265×215 mm). For a full meal setting, consider the Placemat 430×330 mm. Measure your largest serving piece before deciding.
- How will you clean it?: All KINTO wooden trays and placemats are hand-wash only. Wipe with a damp cloth after use. Do not soak, use alcohol sprays, or put in the dishwasher. If you prefer low-maintenance cleaning, look for a synthetic or sealed option instead.
Product facts
- UNITEA コースター 115×115mm: Walnut wood, urethane coating, 115×115×10 mm, handmade. Its compact size and natural walnut grain make it ideal for a single cup or small decor accent, but it lacks a non-slip surface so it's best for stationary use.
UNITEA コースター 115×115mm - UNITEA ノンスリップ トレイ 265×215mm ウィロー: Willow laminated wood with non-slip layer, 265×215×12 mm, handmade.
